Where the Wineries Are
The concentration of tasting rooms in Napa Valley sits in the middle of the valley, around Rutherford and St. Helena, rather than at either end. That is the single most useful thing to know when choosing a base for a wine-focused trip, and it is the thing most hotel listings leave out.
We measure winery proximity as straight-line distance to a stated reference point on the Highway 29 corridor at Rutherford. That is a computable fact. Which individual winery is nearest to a given hotel is not something our data can answer, and we do not claim it.
The corridor distances
Rancho Caymus Inn in Rutherford sits 0.27 miles from our corridor reference point, closer than anything else in the selection. Napa Farmhouse Inn follows at 2.29 miles, then Harvest Inn at 3.2 and Vineyard Country Inn at 3.41, all in St. Helena.
Yountville sits at 4.5 to 4.9 miles. Calistoga is around 12. Downtown Napa is around 13.
That spread is the whole argument. A St. Helena base cuts roughly 10 miles off each leg of a winery day compared with downtown Napa.
The compromise option
Yountville is the usual answer for people who want both. At 4.5 to 4.9 miles from the corridor it is far closer than Napa, and it is the most walkable village in the valley for dinner afterwards. What it costs is money: a median price snapshot of $614 against $345 in St. Helena.
What we will not tell you
Which wineries to visit, or that any hotel is walking distance from one. Tasting rooms are spread along several miles of corridor, and our data holds no property from which a meaningful number is reachable on foot. Anyone telling you otherwise is not measuring.
