Spa, Pool and Hot Springs Explained

These three words get used as though they overlap, and in Napa Valley they do not. A pool is a pool. A spa is a treatment facility. Hot springs means geothermal or mineral water on site, which is the specific reason many people choose Calistoga over anywhere else in the valley.

Across our 61 properties, 29 have a confirmed pool, 25 have a confirmed spa, and 2 have a mineral or hot springs connection we can evidence. Those three numbers describe three different things, and the last one is much smaller than the marketing around this valley suggests.

Of 61 properties, 25 have a spa and 29 have a pool, but only 15 have both and 22 have neither.

What we can and cannot confirm

Our source data records whether a spa exists, not what it contains. A full-service spa with a treatment menu and a single treatment room are recorded identically, so we do not describe what any spa offers. The same applies to pools: we know a pool exists, not whether it is heated, indoor, outdoor or open year round.

For hot springs the bar is higher, because the claim is more specific. We only list a property where the mineral or geothermal connection can be evidenced, which for the two we publish comes from the property's own registered name.

Calistoga is the thermal town, with a caveat

Calistoga is built on geothermal water and that is its distinguishing feature against the rest of the valley. But being in Calistoga is not evidence that a hotel has thermal water: of its twelve properties in our selection, six have a pool, three have a spa, and two carry a confirmed springs connection.

Counterintuitively, Calistoga has the fewest confirmed spas of the four main towns. Napa has 13, Yountville 5, St. Helena 4 and Calistoga 3. If a treatment-led spa stay is what you want rather than thermal water specifically, Napa offers the widest choice.

What to check before booking

Whether the spa is on site or an arrangement with a nearby facility. Whether access is included or charged. Whether the pool is heated and open in the month you are travelling. None of that is in our data, and all of it changes the value of the feature.

Frequently asked questions

Which Calistoga hotels actually have hot springs?

Two in our selection: Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort and Mineral Springs, and Calistoga Spa Hot Springs. A third, Mount View Hotel & Spa, is pending verification.

Is a spa hotel the same as a hot springs hotel?

No. Twenty-five properties have a confirmed spa; two have a confirmed springs connection.

Are the pools heated?

Not recorded in our data. Confirm with the property, particularly outside the summer months.

The short answer

Go to Calistoga for thermal water, and check our hot springs selection rather than assuming the town guarantees it. Go to Napa for the widest choice of confirmed spas. Treat a pool as a separate question from both.
