Hotel, Inn or Bed and Breakfast?
These labels are used loosely almost everywhere, so it is worth saying where ours come from: the property type recorded in our source data, not our own impression of a place. On that basis our 61 properties break down into hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts and resorts, and the differences between them are real.
The short version is that ratings tend to rise and facility lists tend to shrink as you move from hotel to inn to bed and breakfast.
Bed and breakfasts: high ratings, few facilities
Eleven properties carry this type. The group holds some of the highest guest scores in the valley, including Churchill Manor at 9.8 and Foothill House at 9.7, the top-rated properties in Napa and Calistoga respectively.
The facility lists are correspondingly short. Blackbird Inn, Cabernet House and Foothill House list nothing at all in the current property data. Only Rustridge Ranch & Winery has a pool. Whether breakfast is included, despite the property type, is not recorded either.
Inns: the broadest label
Sixteen properties are classified as inns, the largest single format group, and it covers very different things. SENZA Hotel is an inn with a pool, a restaurant, a terrace and 727 reviews. Aurora Park Cottages is an inn that lists only a shuttle.
If you are choosing on the label alone, you cannot predict what you will get. Read the facility list rather than the type.
Hotels and resorts: facilities, at a price
Hotels dominate the full-facility end. Resorts split into large-campus properties like Silverado Resort and Carneros Resort and Spa, and small-format properties like North Block Hotel and The Inn on Pine whose facility mix earns the label without the acreage.
That distinction is worth checking before booking. The word resort in our source data describes what a property has, not how big it is.
Frequently asked questions
Is breakfast included at a bed and breakfast here?
Not recorded in our source data. The property type indicates the format, not the inclusions. Confirm with the property.
What is the difference between an inn and a hotel?
We use the type recorded in our source data rather than applying our own definition. In practice inns here are smaller and far more variable in facilities.
Which format has the best ratings?
Bed and breakfasts, on average, and the shortest facility lists to go with them.
The short answer
Choose a bed and breakfast if rating and character matter more than amenities. Choose a hotel or resort if you want a pool, a spa or somewhere to eat on site. With an inn, ignore the label and read the facility list.
