Planning a First Trip to Napa Valley

The most common first-trip mistake is booking on the hotel and discovering the town later. The five bases in our selection differ far more than the hotels within them do, and the differences are measurable: 25 miles end to end, a median price range from $245 to $614, and hotel counts from 1 to 32.

For most first visits the answer is downtown Napa, and the reason is not that it is the best town. It is that it is the most forgiving one.

Napa offers the most choice at 32 properties but sits a median 12.8 miles from the winery corridor, while St. Helena offers 8 at a median 4.2 miles.

Why downtown Napa suits a first visit

Choice, first. Napa holds 32 of our 61 selected properties, against 12 in Calistoga and 8 each in Yountville and St. Helena. If a specific format or price band matters to you, Napa is the only town likely to have several options rather than one.

Then the walkable district. Sixteen properties sit within a mile of our downtown reference point, and the restaurant and tasting-room district there is the largest in the valley. If a plan falls through, there is something else within walking distance.

Finally price. The median price snapshot in Napa is $247, against $614 in Yountville.

What you give up

Distance to the wineries. Downtown Napa sits about 13 miles from our Highway 29 corridor reference point, the furthest of any base except the outlying properties. On a trip built around tasting rooms rather than restaurants, that is the wrong trade.

Pools too. Only two of the sixteen downtown-cluster properties have one.

When to choose differently

If the trip is mainly about wineries, St. Helena puts you 2.3 to 4.9 miles from the corridor. If it is mainly about eating and walking, Yountville is more compact than Napa, though considerably more expensive. If it is about thermal water or value, Calistoga rates highest per dollar in our data.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights do you need in Napa Valley?

We have no data on trip length and do not publish a recommendation. What we can say is that the valley is 25 miles end to end, so a base at one end adds driving to anything at the other.

Napa in most cases, for choice, walkable dining and price. See our Napa versus Yountville comparison for the measured differences.

The short answer

Choose the town before the hotel. For a first visit that usually means downtown Napa, unless wineries are the whole point, in which case start with St. Helena.
